Welcome to the website of the Mirandola Institute.

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Mirandola Institute website and other digital properties that link to these Terms (collectively, the “Site”).

The Mirandola Institute (“Mirandola,” “the Institute,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) provides the Site subject to these Terms. By accessing or using the Site, you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Site.

Privacy

Please review our Privacy Policy, which describes how the Institute collects, uses, and protects personal information associated with the Site.

Intellectual Purpose

The Site provides access to scholarship, essays, publications, educational materials, institutional documents, commentary, research, and other material concerning artificial intelligence, human capability, institutions, knowledge, education, and related subjects.

Material published by the Institute is provided for scholarly, educational, informational, and public-inquiry purposes.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, publication by the Institute does not constitute legal, financial, medical, investment, technological, or other professional advice.

Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise indicated, the Site and the material published on it—including text, graphics, logos, visual identity elements, illustrations, photographs, designs, compilations, software, and other content—are owned by the Mirandola Institute, its authors, contributors, licensors, or other respective rights holders and are protected by applicable copyright, trademark, and other intellectual-property laws.

Nothing in these Terms transfers ownership of Institute intellectual property to you.

Permitted Use

Subject to these Terms, the Institute grants you a limited, revocable, nonexclusive, nontransferable, and nonsublicensable right to access and use the Site for lawful personal, educational, scholarly, research, journalistic, and other noncommercial purposes.

You may link to publicly available pages on the Site provided that the link does not falsely suggest sponsorship, endorsement, affiliation, or approval by the Institute.

Ordinary quotation, citation, commentary, criticism, scholarship, teaching, research, and other uses permitted by copyright law remain unaffected by these Terms.

Prohibited Use

Except as permitted by applicable law or with prior written permission from the Institute, you may not:

reproduce or distribute substantial portions of the Site for commercial purposes;
republish Institute content in a manner that falsely represents it as your own or removes attribution or copyright information;
use Institute trademarks, logos, or visual identity in a manner likely to cause confusion concerning affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement;
interfere with the operation or security of the Site;
attempt to gain unauthorized access to systems, accounts, networks, or information;
introduce malicious code or use the Site to distribute malware;
impersonate the Institute or another person or organization;
use the Site for unlawful, fraudulent, abusive, or deceptive activity; or
circumvent technical measures intended to protect the Site.

Automated Access, Data Mining, and Artificial Intelligence

Automated tools may interact with publicly accessible portions of the Site only in a manner consistent with applicable law, technical access controls, these Terms, and any machine-readable instructions or policies published by the Institute.

You may not use automated means to:

circumvent access controls or technical restrictions;
materially interfere with Site operation or impose an unreasonable burden on Site infrastructure;
access nonpublic portions of the Site;
harvest personal information, email addresses, or other identifiers;
misrepresent the source or authorship of Institute material; or
use Institute content in a manner that infringes copyright or other applicable rights.

Nothing in these Terms is intended to restrict uses that applicable law expressly permits, including applicable rights of quotation, criticism, research, analysis, or fair use.

The Institute may adopt additional policies concerning automated access, computational research, machine learning, or artificial-intelligence training as technologies, scholarly practices, and applicable law develop.

Trademarks

THE MIRANDOLA INSTITUTE, MIRANDOLA INSTITUTE, HUMANITAI, the Mirandola mark, and other names, marks, logos, designs, and identifiers displayed on the Site may be trademarks or other protected identifiers of the Institute.

They may not be used in a manner that falsely implies affiliation, endorsement, sponsorship, or authorization by the Institute.

Marks belonging to third parties remain the property of their respective owners.

Scholarly Attribution and Citation

The Institute encourages serious engagement with its work.

When quoting, discussing, reproducing, or building upon Institute scholarship, users should provide attribution appropriate to the nature of the material and the conventions of the relevant scholarly, professional, or public context.

These Terms do not expand or restrict rights otherwise available under copyright law.

Submissions and Correspondence

The Institute may invite articles, essays, research, commentary, challenges, responses, proposals, or other contributions.

Unless separate submission terms expressly provide otherwise, sending material to the Institute does not transfer ownership of your copyright or other intellectual-property rights to the Institute.

If material is accepted for publication, the rights granted to the Institute and the terms governing publication may be established through separate contributor, publication, or submission terms.

You represent that material you submit is yours to submit or that you otherwise possess the rights necessary to provide it to the Institute.

You may not knowingly submit material that:

infringes the intellectual-property or privacy rights of another person;
is unlawful, fraudulent, defamatory, threatening, or malicious;
contains malware or harmful code; or
falsely identifies its authorship or source.

The Institute is not obligated to review, respond to, publish, preserve, or return unsolicited material.

Unless the Institute has expressly agreed otherwise, unsolicited correspondence or ideas should not be considered confidential.

HumanitAI and Other Publications

HumanitAI and other Institute publications may operate under additional editorial, contributor, review, correction, disclosure, or publication policies.

Those policies supplement these Terms where applicable.

The views expressed in individually authored works are those of their authors unless the work expressly states that it represents an institutional position of the Mirandola Institute.

Publication does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the Institute, its editors, advisers, contributors, partners, or supporters.

Links to Third-Party Sites

The Site may contain links to websites or resources operated by third parties.

These links are provided for reference, citation, convenience, or scholarly context. The Institute does not control third-party sites and is not responsible for their availability, content, security, privacy practices, or accuracy.

The inclusion of a link does not necessarily constitute endorsement of the linked organization, publication, product, service, or viewpoint.

Electronic Communications

When you communicate with the Institute electronically, including by email or through the Site, you consent to receive responsive or administrative communications from us electronically.

Where permitted by law, electronic communications may satisfy requirements that communications be provided in writing.

Unsolicited Commercial Email

The publication of an email address on the Site is not an invitation to send unsolicited commercial email.

You may not use automated tools to collect email addresses or other contact information from the Site for unsolicited marketing, spam, or similar activity.

Copyright Concerns

The Institute respects the intellectual-property rights of others.

If you believe material appearing on the Site infringes your copyright, please send a written notice to hello@mirandolainstitute.org identifying:

the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed;
the material on the Site that you believe is infringing and information sufficient for us to locate it;
your contact information;
a statement explaining the basis for your belief that the use is unauthorized; and
sufficient information for the Institute to evaluate and respond to the request.

The Institute may request additional information before acting on a notice.

Nothing in this section constitutes a representation that the Institute has designated the above email address as a statutory agent under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or any other specific statutory notice regime.

Site Security

You may not use the Site, its systems, networks, or services to engage in illegal, abusive, disruptive, or unauthorized activity.

Prohibited conduct includes attempting to:

gain unauthorized access to systems or data;
probe or test vulnerabilities without authorization;
defeat authentication or security controls;
interfere with service availability;
distribute malicious software;
harvest information contrary to these Terms; or
use the Site in a manner reasonably likely to damage the Institute, its systems, or other users.

The Institute may take reasonable measures to detect, prevent, investigate, or respond to security threats and abuse.

Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SITE AND ITS CONTENT ARE PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS.

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE MIRANDOLA INSTITUTE DISCLAIMS WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

The Institute seeks intellectual and factual rigor, but scholarship develops through inquiry, criticism, correction, and revision. We do not warrant that every statement, publication, citation, analysis, or other item appearing on the Site will at all times be complete, current, accurate, or free from error.

We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure, or free from viruses or other harmful components.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE MIRANDOLA INSTITUTE AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, EDITORS, CONTRIBUTORS, AGENTS, AND AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, PUNITIVE, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR ACCESS TO OR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO ACCESS OR USE, THE SITE OR ITS CONTENT.

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE AGGREGATE LIABILITY OF THE INSTITUTE FOR CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SITE OR THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).

Some jurisdictions do not permit certain exclusions or limitations of liability. Where such law applies, these provisions will operate only to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Indemnification

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Mirandola Institute and its officers, directors, employees, agents, and representatives from claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and reasonable costs arising from your unlawful use of the Site, your material violation of these Terms, or material you submit in violation of another person’s rights.

Suspension and Termination

The Institute may restrict, suspend, or terminate access to all or part of the Site where reasonably necessary to protect the Site, enforce these Terms, respond to unlawful activity, comply with law, or maintain the integrity and security of Institute systems.

You may stop using the Site at any time.

Provisions that by their nature should survive termination, including provisions concerning intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and applicable law, will survive.

Changes to the Site and These Terms

The Institute may revise the Site, its policies, or these Terms as its activities, technologies, or legal obligations develop.

Material revisions to these Terms will be posted on the Site with an updated effective date. Your continued use of the Site after revised Terms take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms to the extent permitted by law.

Governing Law

These Terms and disputes arising from or relating to the Site will be governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles.

To the extent a dispute is properly brought in court and applicable law permits the parties to select a forum, the state and federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, will have jurisdiction.

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted by law or severed to the extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in effect.

No Waiver

Failure by the Institute to enforce a provision of these Terms does not waive its right to enforce that provision or any other provision in the future.

Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any additional terms expressly applicable to a particular Institute service, program, submission, or publication, constitute the applicable agreement governing use of the Site.
