AI Humanist Institution

Institutional development for the age of artificial intelligence.

What should an institution become more capable of as machine capability expands?

An institutional counterpart

Human development has an institutional counterpart.

Studia Humanitatis asks how people should develop as intelligent machines become increasingly capable. Institutions face the same developmental problem.

They can improve output while losing expertise. They can automate work while weakening the pathways through which future judgment develops. They can generate more information while accumulating less institutional understanding.

AI Humanism therefore treats institutions, as well as people, as objects of capability development.

The institution should develop alongside the machines it employs.

Capability conversion

Better performance is not necessarily greater capability.

Artificial intelligence can expand what an institution accomplishes immediately without necessarily increasing what the institution can understand, judge, learn, or do reliably over time.

Machine capability What an intelligent system can do.
AI-assisted performance What an institution can accomplish while using it.
Institutional capability What remains as durable capacity to understand, judge, coordinate, learn, adapt, and act.

These constructs may develop together. They need not.

Four pillars

Institutional capability is multidimensional.

Human Agency

Does human responsibility remain supported by the capability required to exercise it?

Institutional Integrity

Does AI-assisted performance become durable institutional capability?

Knowledge Stewardship

Does machine-assisted work leave greater institutional knowledge and understanding behind?

Governed Intelligence

Does delegated execution teach the institution how people and machines should work together next time?

Provisional institutional standard

Make capability development explicit.

The AI Humanist Institution Provisional Standard v1.0 translates the institutional principles of AI Humanism into an assessable framework for practice.

Institutions identify consequential capability, determine what they intend to Develop, Preserve, Transform, or Retire, establish how that trajectory will be judged, observe what happens, and respond when reality diverges from intention.

IdentifyCommitObserveRespond

Conformance with v1.0 is based on institutional self-declaration. The Mirandola Institute does not certify conformity with this version of the Standard.

The institutional test

What greater durable human or institutional capability exists because machine capability became available?
